Ão returns with new single ‘Orgulho’

New album ‘Malandra’ out on 13 February

In recent years, Ão has established themselves in Belgium and Europe with their enchanting blend of electronica, art pop, saudade, and alternative Latin. Frontwoman Brenda Corijn, who draws from her Mozambican-Portuguese roots, sings in both Portuguese and English. Her warm voice merges with Siebe Chau's southern guitar playing, layered electronics from Jolan Decaestecker's and Bert Peyffers' eclectic percussion work.

Built around delicate acoustic guitar and the elegant singing of Brenda Corijn, the exquisite new single ‘Orgulho’ is full of pride and melancholy.

“During an interview I did with my mother for a theatre production, I had to ask her whether she was jealous of me — Brenda explains. She replied, ‘Jealous isn’t the right word, but I would like to be that which you are.’ Her words have stuck with me and stay in this song, Orgulho, which means ‘proud’.”

Ão will present their new album ‘Malandra’ on a European tour, visiting Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands. At home, their album release show at Ancienne Belgique sold out three months in advance (2,000 tickets). In June, they will perform Best Kept Secret.

But first: they are playing at ESNS (Fri 16 Jan - Huize Maas - 21:30).
